Solvents are excipients used in ointments and other products to enhance solubility, taste, anti-microbial effectiveness or stability, to reduce dose volume (such as oral, injections). Conversely, solvents can be used to optimize insolubility (if taste of an active pharmaceutical ingredient is an issue). Solvents also are used to help the final product achieve the proper consistency.
