Heparin sodium (grc. Hepar - Liver) is a polysaccharide that belongs to the glycosaminoglycans. It contains a variable number of amino sugars. Heparin binds to Antithrombin III, improving binding to clotting factors a thousand times over. The binding inactivates clotting factors, which is why Heparin acts as an anticoagulant.
