Parenteral pharmaceuticals can become unstable over time or lose efficacy if shipped as liquids. To eliminate this concern, lyophilization, or freeze-drying, is used to remove the water from the product by applying a vacuum while freezing the product. This process creates a powder which is more stable and easier to ship. End-users simply reconstitute the powder before administration to the patient.
