AstraZeneca Gets Three Products Approved in Japan

AstraZeneca has announced the approval of three products in Japan.

Ultomiris (ravulizumab) has been approved in Japan for the treatment of adult patients with generalised myasthenia gravis (gMG) who are anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibody-positive and whose symptoms are difficult to control with high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin therapy (IVIg) or plasmaphaeresis. Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency also indicated that Ultomiris can be considered for patients who cannot receive high-dose IVIg or plasmaphaeresis due to complications, adverse reactions or other limiting factors.

Tagrisso (osimertinib) has been approved in Japan for the adjuvant treatment of patients with epidermal growth factor receptor-mutated (EGFRm) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after surgery. This approval by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare was based on positive results from the global ADAURA Phase III trial.

Lynparza (olaparib) has been approved in Japan for the adjuvant treatment of patients with BRCA-mutated (BRCAm), HER2-negative early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence.

This approval by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare was based on results from the OlympiA Phase III trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine in June 2021. In the trial, Lynparza demonstrated a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in invasive disease-free survival (iDFS), reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer recurrences, new cancers, or death by 42% versus placebo (based on a hazard ratio [HR] of 0.58; 99.5% confidence interval [CI] 0.41-0.82; p<0.0001).
