The Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) of the FDA has announced its response to an external evaluation commissioned last year from an independent panel of evaluators working through the Reagan-Udall Foundation. This evaluation provided an opportunity to critically examine the regulatory processes and operations of the Tobacco Program.
Despite making significant progress in reducing death and disability caused by tobacco use, the CTP recognizes the importance of continually improving its effectiveness to protect public health, support staff, and respond to external stakeholders. The FDA was granted authority to regulate tobacco, which enhanced the effectiveness of the public health and medical communities in reducing the toll of tobacco products.
As the use of combustible tobacco continues to decline and innovation in the e-cigarette industry continues, societal concerns are becoming increasingly prominent. The CTP has outlined immediate, short-term, and long-term actions it is taking to keep pace with these changes and successfully implement regulatory oversight of tobacco products.
CTP Director Brian King, Ph.D., M.P.H. has provided more detail on the CTP's response to the evaluation recommendations and its plans, which include the release of a 5-year strategic plan and comprehensive policy agenda by the end of the year. The CTP has committed to providing regular updates on the progress of these activities.
