On May 9, 2023, Croda commenced the construction of its latest manufacturing facility in Lamar, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. This development aligns with Croda Pharma's strategic focus on enhancing the delivery of biologics. The company is making a substantial investment in a new facility spanning 23,680 square feet, dedicated to manufacturing ingredients for drug delivery systems used in groundbreaking therapeutic drugs like mRNA vaccines and gene editing therapies. The facility will produce lipids already utilized in therapeutics and vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine, while also supporting the development of next-generation therapeutics, including cutting-edge cancer treatments that require lipids.
Croda is widely recognized as a leading collaborator in the development of delivery systems for biologics. With the United States aiming to expand domestic manufacturing of critical vaccines and therapeutics, Croda's new Lamar facility, a joint effort between the federal government and Croda, will play a crucial role in supporting future advancements in medicine.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Croda demonstrated its ability to scale production of essential lipid nanoparticles used in mRNA COVID vaccines. Since then, there has been a surge in mRNA and gene editing projects that rely on the same delivery system.
Construction on the facility will commence this year, with the anticipated completion of the new capacity by 2025. The facility is part of an 80-acre multipurpose cGMP site acquired by the company in 2021. This expansion will generate up to 50 new jobs in Pennsylvania, encompassing roles in engineering, administration, maintenance, operations, and logistics. From the outset, the vision for this site is to contribute fully to Croda's sustainability goals.
The project has received support, either in whole or in part, from federal funds provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, specifically the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, BARDA, the Department of Defense Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND), and the Army Contracting Command under contract number W58P05-22-2-0002.
