Purdue Pharma/Sackler Family Reach $7.4B Opioid Settlement

Reuters reports that Purdue Pharma and its Sackler family owners have reached a new $7.4 billion settlement to resolve thousands of lawsuits related to the opioid crisis11. The agreement, announced on Thursday, January 23, 2025, marks a significant increase from the previous settlement that was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 20248.

Under the terms of the new settlement, the Sackler family will contribute $6.5 billion, while Purdue Pharma will pay $900 million12. This arrangement aims to compensate victims, mitigate the opioid crisis, and provide funding for treatment and overdose reversal medications1.

The settlement still requires court approval, and some details remain to be finalized2. If approved, it would end the Sacklers' ownership of Purdue Pharma, transforming it into a new entity with a board appointed by states and other litigants2.

This agreement is among the largest reached in recent years as part of a series of lawsuits filed by local, state, and Native American tribal governments seeking to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for the ongoing addiction crisis2. The settlement funds are expected to be used for opioid addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery programs across the United States over the next 15 years12.
