Bristol Myers Squibb Expands Cost-Cutting Target to $2 Billion by 2027

Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) has announced an expansion of its ongoing cost-cutting initiative, aiming to save $2 billion by the end of 20274. This new target represents a significant increase from the company's original goal of $1.5 billion in cuts by the end of 2025, which was announced in April 20241.

The pharmaceutical giant's latest announcement comes as part of its full-year 2025 guidance, where it projected annual revenue of approximately $45.5 billion, falling short of analyst expectations of $47.36 billion4. This expanded cost-reduction plan appears to be a strategic move to address potential financial challenges and streamline operations.

BMS's restructuring efforts have already resulted in substantial workforce reductions:

- The company initially planned to eliminate about 2,200 jobs by the end of 2024, representing roughly 6% of its global workforce1.

- In Lawrenceville, New Jersey alone, BMS has announced layoffs affecting a total of 1,134 employees through 20252.

- An additional 195 positions in New Jersey are slated for elimination between February 13, 2025, and December 31, 20255.

These job cuts are part of BMS's broader strategy to become more agile and efficient, as stated by CEO Chris Boerner. The company intends to reinvest the savings into R&D programs with the highest potential return on investment and focus on long-term growth3.

Despite the ongoing restructuring, BMS has reported strong financial performance in recent quarters, with revenues boosted by robust sales of products such as Eliquis and Opdivo3. However, the company faces challenges, including patent cliffs for key drugs and the need to invest in potential new blockbusters.
