The White House has fired Dr. Susan Monarez, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), after less than a month on the job, following her refusal to align with administration directives and requests for the resignations of key staff. Dr. Monarez, a scientist appointed by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate in July, was ousted amid tense disagreements over vaccine policy, the dismissal of experienced personnel, and the direction of public health guidance at the agency.
Monarez’s legal team insists the move is “legally deficient,” stating she did not resign and had not been formally notified of her termination. The decision prompted the immediate resignation of at least four senior CDC officials, who cited dissatisfaction with shifting vaccine policies and concerns over the politicization of public health.
The abrupt shake-up comes as the CDC faces significant challenges, including the aftermath of a violent incident at its Atlanta headquarters and widespread vaccine misinformation. Public health advocates warn that Monarez’s removal signals deeper instability at the nation’s leading health agency and may undermine evidence-based responses to current and future health threats.
