AbbVie Commits $10B to U.S. Manufacturing and Packaging Expansion

AbbVie is undertaking a multi-year investment strategy to expand its manufacturing and packaging footprint in the United States, committing more than $10 billion over the next decade to support volume growth and new therapeutic areas such as obesity and immunology. The initiative will add at least four new domestic manufacturing plants, expanding production capacity for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), drug products, peptides, and medical devices. The effort includes a $195 million API facility in North Chicago, Illinois, with construction beginning in fall 2025 and operations expected by 2027. AbbVie’s CEO, Rob Michael, cited the expansion as crucial for bolstering supply chain resilience and supporting long-term growth trajectories for their portfolio, notably in neuroscience, immunology, and oncology.

The company currently operates 11 manufacturing sites in the U.S., supporting more than 6,000 jobs nationwide and over 11,000 employees in Illinois alone. Growth in the U.S. will be supported by enhanced biologics manufacturing, with additional capabilities for on-site research and development. The expansion is described as a proactive response to anticipated pharmaceutical import tariffs under President Trump, which could reach 250% by 2027. AbbVie is also leveraging competitive tax policy reforms to ensure sustained investment.

Industry analysts note AbbVie’s expanded footprint is intended to safeguard supply integrity for major products, including Skyrizi and Rinvoq, and position the company for volume expansion in new therapeutic areas. AbbVie’s U.S. investment joins similar large-scale commitments from firms like Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, and Eli Lilly.
