AstraZeneca has agreed to acquire Modella AI, a Boston‑based biomedical artificial intelligence company, in a transaction designed to deepen the use of advanced AI across its global oncology research and development organization. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The acquisition builds on a multi‑year collaboration announced in July 2025 and transitions Modella AI from partner to wholly owned AstraZeneca unit. Modella’s multimodal foundation models and “agentic” AI platform will be integrated into AstraZeneca’s oncology R&D environment, with the goal of accelerating clinical development, enhancing biomarker discovery, and supporting more data‑driven decision‑making across the cancer pipeline.
According to the companies, Modella AI’s technology is focused on combining pathology, imaging, and other biomarker data to generate new biological and clinical insights, as well as to automate and scale data‑intensive workflows. AstraZeneca executives said the acquisition supports a broader strategy to apply AI to drug discovery, trial design, and precision diagnostics in oncology.
Modella AI will operate from Boston within AstraZeneca’s oncology organization, with its team and platform expected to support global trials and clinical programs once the transaction closes.
