Norgine Invests £23M in Welsh Manufacturing Site, Expanding Total Investment to Over £50M

Norgine B.V., a European specialty pharmaceutical company, has announced a new £23 million investment in its Hengoed, Wales manufacturing facility. The expansion brings the company’s total investment at the site to more than £50 million since 2022.

The initiative, supported by the UK Government’s Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund (LSIMF), is intended to expand production capacity, modernize manufacturing operations, and enhance the site's quality control capabilities. Norgine said the project will create 44 new skilled jobs and strengthen its ability to supply medicines across the UK and Europe during a period of global supply chain uncertainty.

Planned upgrades include expanded production and warehousing space, integration of high‑speed and energy‑efficient equipment, and improved quality management systems. The facility, which currently employs more than 600 people, already produces about 50 million packs of medicines and medical devices annually using 100% low‑carbon electricity.

UK Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens welcomed the announcement, describing it as a vote of confidence in the Welsh life sciences workforce. “We have a thriving life sciences sector in Wales, and this investment from Norgine is a vote of confidence in our Welsh workforce,” Stevens said.

Norgine Chief Operating Officer Saulo Martiniano said the investment will boost the company’s capacity and resilience. “By expanding and further enhancing our Hengoed facilities, we are increasing capacity, strengthening quality capabilities, and investing in energy‑efficient production,” he said.

Norgine plans additional investments over the next several years, with expectations of creating more than 75 permanent manufacturing, quality, and warehouse roles in Wales. The company operates an extensive manufacturing network across Europe, with key facilities in Wales and Dreux, France, and maintains partnerships with suppliers in other regions, including Japan.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, Norgine is expanding education and training efforts through student placements with Cardiff University and apprenticeship programs with local colleges to support the development of future life sciences professionals.
