Sandoz has signed a direct manufacturing and supply agreement with the government of Rwanda to support stable access to critical medicines in Rwanda and selected African partner countries. The products covered include antibiotics and cancer therapies, with the initial scope comprising approximately 60 medicines. The agreement was signed at a ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.
The new partnership builds on the 2025 Alpbach Communiqué, a cross-sector, multinational initiative aimed at securing European Union–based supply of critical antibiotics for Europe and partner regions. The Communiqué, issued in Tyrol, Austria, was endorsed by Sandoz and supported by the government of Rwanda, which hosts the African Medicines Agency.
Under the agreement, additional medicine volumes will be manufactured and supplied from the Sandoz site in Kundl, Austria. Kundl serves as the hub of what Sandoz describes as Europe’s last major end-to-end antibiotic manufacturing network. The arrangement is intended to enable a more predictable supply of essential medicines for Rwanda and other participating African countries, with the possibility of expanding to further markets over time.
Rwanda’s Ministry of Health noted that the country reimburses certain cancer treatments through its public health system and continues to prioritize infectious diseases. Through this collaboration with a biosimilar and generic medicines producer, Rwanda aims to broaden access to quality, affordable cancer treatments and key antibiotic therapies for patients within Rwanda and across the African Union.
