Armata Pharmaceuticals reported progress across clinical, regulatory, and manufacturing activities as it prepares to initiate a Phase 3 superiority study of its bacteriophage candidate AP‑SA02 in complicated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.
The company has submitted a complete Phase 3 protocol for AP‑SA02 to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, incorporating feedback from its End‑of‑Phase 2 meeting. Armata also provided full responses to FDA comments covering clinical design, chemistry, manufacturing and controls, and other regulatory topics. The planned pivotal trial will evaluate intravenous AP‑SA02 as adjunctive therapy to best available antibiotics in patients with bacteremia caused by methicillin‑sensitive or methicillin‑resistant S. aureus, with initiation targeted for the second half of 2026 and intended to support a future biologics license application.
On the manufacturing side, Armata has completed four engineering runs of AP‑SA02 at its in‑house cGMP facility in Los Angeles. Production of clinical trial material for the Phase 3 study is the next planned step.
The company also noted an additional $2.5 million increment to its existing award from the U.S. Department of Defense, bringing total funding under that award to $28.7 million. These funds are earmarked for activities related to Phase 3 preparation, and Armata remains in discussions with DoD about potential further support, while exploring other funding options.
Armata announced that David House has been promoted to chief financial officer, formalizing leadership for financial planning as the program moves into late‑stage development. AP‑SA02 has previously received FDA Qualified Infectious Disease Product and Fast Track designations, and Phase 2a results from the diSArm study were reported as positive in a late‑breaking presentation at IDWeek 2025.
