Alpha Cognition said the European Patent Office has granted a patent covering a crystalline solid form of benzgalantamine, the active ingredient in ZUNVEYL, for use in the treatment of mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease.
The patent includes claims covering the specific crystalline solid form, related pharmaceutical compositions, preparations, methods of manufacture and medical-use claims. Alpha Cognition said the grant strengthens its global intellectual property portfolio and may extend patent protection for benzgalantamine’s development and potential commercialization into 2042, subject to applicable patent requirements.
The company said the European patent may also be validated in applicable EPC member states, expanding intellectual property coverage across key markets in Europe, including both European Union and non-EU jurisdictions such as Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Chief Executive Officer Michael McFadden said the patent is an important step in building broad intellectual property protection around benzgalantamine and ZUNVEYL as a differentiated treatment option for patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease. He said the stronger European IP position supports the long-term clinical and commercial potential of benzgalantamine.
