The European Commission has officially revoked the marketing authorization for Tavneos (avacopan), finalizing a process that began with regulators flagging the drug's pivotal trial data as "incorrect and misleading." The EC issued its legally binding decision on August 4, 2026, confirming a recommendation from the European Medicines Agency's human medicines committee (CHMP) that had been building since earlier this year .
The case traces back to January 2026, when EMA became aware of new information raising serious questions about the handling of the database behind the ADVOCATE study, the trial that originally supported Tavneos' EU approval for granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis. After a formal Article 20 review, the CHMP concluded in June that ADVOCATE had been conducted in breach of good clinical practice principles, and that the data submitted at the time of authorization could no longer be relied upon to demonstrate the drug's effectiveness . Post-marketing data and post-hoc analyses were deemed insufficient to fill that gap, leading the committee to recommend revocation.
With the European Commission's August 4 decision, that recommendation is now binding across all EU member states. Vifor Fresenius Medical Care Renal Pharma and CSL, which market the drug in Europe, confirmed the outcome in an August 6 statement, noting Tavneos will no longer be available for prescribing in the EU and European Economic Area, and urging physicians to discuss alternative treatment paths with current patients. The company said it is "disappointed" but will work with EMA and national authorities to implement the withdrawal.
EMA has since published translated versions of its scientific conclusions across all EU languages, rounding out the public record on August 13. The action mirrors a parallel U.S. proceeding, where the FDA proposed withdrawing Tavneos' approval in April over similar data manipulation concerns.
