Gilead Sciences has opened a 182,000-square-foot research center at its Foster City, California, headquarters, bringing together oncology, inflammation and research data-science operations.
The five-story facility is one of three projects planned in Foster City as part of Gilead’s previously announced $32 billion investment in U.S. research, development and manufacturing through 2030. The company said the broader investment is expected to support 3,000 domestic jobs.
The research center is designed to accommodate about 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists. Its laboratory areas, collaboration spaces and shared technology platforms are intended to support work across multiple research disciplines and allow teams to adjust laboratory configurations as research needs change.
Gilead said locating oncology, inflammation and research data-science teams in the same building is intended to support coordination among research groups. A bridge links the center to an adjacent building, allowing equipment and research materials to be moved between facilities.
The company employs approximately 11,000 people in the United States, including more than 7,400 workers in California and nearly 4,700 in the Bay Area.
Two other projects are planned at the Foster City campus. Gilead expects to open a Technical Development Center in 2027. A biologics manufacturing facility, for which construction began in August, is expected to open in 2029.
The research center uses all-electric building systems and incorporates energy-efficient design measures. Landscaping uses California native plants and water-saving features. Gilead said the facility is expected to qualify for LEED Gold certification, a building standard for environmental design and operating performance.
Daniel O’Day, Gilead’s chairman and chief executive officer, said the center is part of the company’s broader U.S. investment program. Flavius Martin, executive vice president of research, said the site will house research teams and data-science capabilities.
