Genentech has begun construction on a $750 million expansion of its manufacturing site in Hillsboro, Oregon. The 211,000-square-foot project will double the size of the existing facility, with commercial operations planned to begin in 2031.
The expansion will add device fill-and-finish manufacturing, including production of combination products that pair medicines with delivery devices. Genentech said the facility is designed for both high- and low-volume filling and could support medicines in oncology, neurology and immunology.
The company expects the project to create approximately 250 manufacturing jobs and support about 200 construction jobs. It plans to hire for filling and inspection, device assembly and packaging, cold storage, and quality control. The new facility will use automation, robotics and digital systems in its production processes.
Genentech established its Hillsboro campus in 2006. The 75-acre site currently handles drug product manufacturing, packaging, distribution and individualized therapies. The expansion follows plans Genentech announced in August to increase its U.S. capacity for advanced drug delivery devices.
Roche, Genentech’s parent company, said the Hillsboro project forms part of its broader U.S. manufacturing and research investment program, alongside projects in Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Boston. Genentech CEO Ashley Magargee said the new building will bring device fill-and-finish operations to Hillsboro.
