BioMarin plans to eliminate 117 jobs in California, while Novo plans to cut 108 positions at its U.S. headquarters in New Jersey. The two reductions, reported by Fierce Pharma, The Press Democrat and NJBIZ, total 225 jobs and are scheduled to take effect in December.
BioMarin’s cuts take effect Dec. 4. The Press Democrat reported that 114 affected employees work at 105 Digital Drive in Novato, with two in San Mateo and one in Sacramento. The company is also eliminating two positions outside California, bringing its total reduction to 119.
BioMarin attributed the move to a consolidation of its Novato operations. The site will remain its primary drug-substance manufacturing location for Aldurazyme and Naglazyme, while other activities will be transferred, divested or decommissioned, the company told The Press Democrat. BioMarin also plans to convert another Novato property into a laboratory facility for technical development and services.
Novo’s 108 job cuts at its Plainsboro headquarters are listed in New Jersey’s WARN notice archive with a Dec. 31 effective date. NJBIZ reported that the reductions follow a broader restructuring that began last year. A Novo spokesperson told the publication that the company regularly reviews its organization in response to market conditions and patient needs.
The BioMarin and Novo cuts involve separate companies and plans: BioMarin is consolidating its California facilities, while Novo is reducing positions at its New Jersey headquarters.
