AstraZeneca Plans $2 Billion Restructuring to Fund Pipeline

AstraZeneca has launched a restructuring program expected to cost up to $2 billion and deliver $1.5 billion in annualized pretax benefits, with savings reinvested principally in its drug development pipeline.

The Reshaping for Sustainable Growth program will redeploy resources and strengthen capabilities across the company’s existing businesses and therapy areas over the next three years. AstraZeneca expects the activities to be essentially complete by the end of 2029.

The initiative comes as the company advances more than 180 pipeline projects. AstraZeneca said the program is intended to create additional capacity to invest in those projects and in new technologies.

The $2 billion estimate represents one-time restructuring costs. The projected $1.5 billion benefit is an annualized pretax run rate, rather than a cumulative savings figure for the three-year implementation period.

AstraZeneca said the savings would remain within the company, with pipeline investment receiving the principal share. The program therefore links changes across existing operations with funding for future research and development.

The company outlined the initiative in its announcement of nine-month and third-quarter 2026 results.
