After studying biology and earning his PhD at the University of Basel, Marcel led several microbiological quality control laboratories at F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd in Switzerland from 2002 to 2010. From 2010 to 2011, he worked as a QC microbiology expert at Novartis Pharma Ltd in Switzerland. Since 2011, he has run his own company, providing consulting, training and project management services in the fields of microbiological quality control and hygiene.

In 2026, he co-founded SporeQuant AG, a company specializing in the development and provision of tools and methods for sterilization and decontamination processes, as well as in supporting customers in the assessment of these processes.

Marcel regularly speaks at conferences and training events. He has authored several scientific papers and book chapters and has edited a book. Since 2003, he has served as the Swiss expert in EDQM Group 1, Microbiological Methods and Statistical Analysis.
