Pharmaceutical Bioreactors and Fermentors

A bioreactor is a container that is used to house organisms. Bioreactors/fermenters are designed to encourage microorganisms to thrive, allowing sufficient fermentation to create a usable end product. In a batch bioreactor, all materials are added simultaneously to a controlled and sealed environment, and the biochemical reactions are allowed to run their course. Afterwards, the contents can be extracted and utilized, disposed of, or further processed. Other bioreactors operate on a continuous flow method, in which materials constantly flow through the bioreactor.

A number of criteria must be satisfied when a bioreactor is built. In order for the device to be effective, conditions need to be tightly controlled. Methods to moderate temperature, light levels, moisture, oxygen, and other components of the bioreactor’s environment ought to be developed prior to setup. It is also important to isolate the contents from contaminants so that the bioreactor can avoid contamination and minimize adverse events
