Poster on Solubility Enhancement of Drugs: Polyvinyl Alcohol as Excipient in Hot Melt Extrusion Process

Limited API solubility is a challenge for most of the current drugs in the pipeline and also in the market resulting in lower bioavailability performance. One possibility to overcome this challenge is hot melt extrusion (HME), a technology where the API is dispersed into a polymer matrix.

This poster explores pharmaceutical-grade PVA as a thermoplastic and thermostable polymer for HME achieving significantly improved solubility of the API, high drug loading up to 50% and excellent thermostability during the HME processing, as well as higher stability of the extrudate at accelerated conditions.
