Dissolved oxygen sensors and dissolved oxygen probes are used to measure the amount of oxygen that is in dissolved media, by unit volume. The amount of oxygen that a given volume of media can hold is a function of the atmospheric pressure at the water-air interface, the temperature of the media, and the amount of other dissolved substances. There are three common technologies for dissolved oxygen measurements: polographic, galvanic and optical. The standard units of measure are milligrams per liter (mg/l), parts per million (ppm), parts per billion (ppb), or % saturation.
