Perrigo Workers in the Bronx Launch Strike Over Overtime and Retirement Benefits

More than 200 workers at Perrigo Company's Bronx manufacturing facility are on strike after the collapse of contract negotiations over overtime protections and retirement contributions, prompting the company to hire permanent replacement workers to keep the plant operational. The labor action, which began on September 2, 2025, involves members of Teamsters Local 210 and follows Perrigo management's proposals to expand operations to seven days a week and alter terms that, according to workers, would jeopardize overtime pay and future retirement security.

Union representatives argue that the company’s plans, which include ceasing contributions to retirement plans and modifying weekend overtime standards, would hurt both current employees and new hires, affecting community stability and worker retention. “During a time when working-class residents in New York are finding it difficult to manage living costs, Perrigo aims to make it more challenging by undermining essential overtime protections and retirement security,” said the Teamsters Local 210 President.

Perrigo, a major supplier of over-the-counter medications for retailers such as Target and CVS, has responded by posting notices warning workers that failure to return to work may result in permanent replacement. The company has also floated counteroffers, including additional pay on weekends rather than standard overtime, citing business needs and efforts to ensure ongoing production.

Negotiations are scheduled to resume on September 10, with Teamsters maintaining picket lines from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day until an agreement is reached. The outcome of this dispute is seen as a potential bellwether for broader labor-management dynamics within the healthcare manufacturing sector, especially as Perrigo pursues a multi-year reorganization strategy while facing sector-wide labor and economic pressures.
