USAntibiotics, the only remaining U.S.-based manufacturer of penicillin and its key derivatives, announced new collaborations with Walmart and McKesson aimed at reinforcing domestic production of amoxicillin. The effort comes as the United States continues to address ongoing concerns over drug shortages and reliance on overseas pharmaceutical supply chains.
Amoxicillin, a widely prescribed antibiotic for pediatric infections and other conditions, has faced intermittent shortages in recent years as global demand surged during seasonal spikes in respiratory illnesses. By partnering with Walmart and McKesson - two of the nation’s largest pharmacy and distribution networks - USAntibiotics intends to expand the reach of its Tennessee-based facility while ensuring reliable access for patients across the country.
Industry observers note that the partnership reflects a broader public health priority: reducing U.S. dependency on foreign active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and finished-dose production. Domestic antibiotic capability has declined over the past two decades, leaving healthcare providers vulnerable to supply disruptions tied to overseas manufacturing.
Company representatives emphasized that the collaborations will help stabilize supply, strengthen resilience, and align with federal initiatives promoting pharmaceutical manufacturing on U.S. soil. The move may also set a precedent for further partnerships between manufacturers and distributors to safeguard the nation’s essential medicine supply chain.
