Novartis to Acquire Tourmaline Bio, Expanding Cardiovascular Pipeline

Novartis announced it will acquire Tourmaline Bio, a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on rare and cardiovascular diseases, in a deal that strengthens the Swiss drugmaker’s late-stage pipeline. Financial details of the transaction were not immediately disclosed, but the move highlights Novartis’ strategy of expanding in therapeutic areas with significant unmet medical need.

Tourmaline Bio specializes in developing therapies targeting cardiovascular and inflammatory conditions. Its lead drug candidate, tolnepangi, is an anti-IL-6 antibody currently being evaluated for high-risk cardiovascular patients. By acquiring Tourmaline, Novartis gains access to this promising program and bolsters its position in cardiometabolic diseases, a space where large pharmaceutical companies are racing to develop novel therapies for heart failure, obesity, and related conditions.

The acquisition comes during a period of heightened dealmaking in the biopharmaceutical sector, as larger companies look to diversify portfolios and secure next-generation assets to offset looming patent expirations. Novartis said Tourmaline’s expertise and pipeline align with its ongoing focus on precision medicines and treatments that can impact millions of patients globally.

The deal is expected to close following customary regulatory and shareholder approvals. Novartis noted it will provide additional details on terms and integration plans in the coming months.
