GSK Names Luke Miels as CEO, Ending Emma Walmsley’s Tenure

GlaxoSmithKline announced a major leadership transition, unveiling Chief Commercial Officer Luke Miels as CEO designate, succeeding Dame Emma Walmsley on January 1, 2026. Walmsley, who made history as the first female chief executive of a major pharmaceutical firm, led the company for nearly nine years and will stay on until September 2026 to support the transition.

Walmsley’s era saw profound strategic change at GSK, including the high-profile demerger and spin-off of its consumer healthcare unit, Haleon, now valued at £29 billion. Under her stewardship, GSK sharpened its focus on specialty medicines and vaccines, revitalized research and development efforts, and introduced 15 pipeline opportunities scheduled for launch between 2025 and 2031. Her commitment to innovation steered the company through the COVID-19 pandemic and several blockbuster product launches, elevating GSK’s status as a leading FTSE 100 biopharma innovator.

The appointment of Miels is described by GSK’s board as the result of robust succession planning, with the company prioritizing a leader experienced in global biopharma and specialty medicines. Miels, who joined GSK in 2017 after senior roles at AstraZeneca, Roche, and Sanofi-Aventis, is recognized for his pivotal role in expanding GSK’s oncology and respiratory portfolios. Industry analysts view this leadership change as a critical move to prepare for growth beyond expiring patents and amid shifts in investor expectations.

Walmsley remarked, “2026 is a pivotal year for GSK to define its path for the decade ahead, and I believe the right moment for new leadership. I’m proud to have prepared the company for seamless succession and future success.” Miels responded, “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as the next CEO of GSK, with humility and ambition to drive patient impact and shareholder value”.
