Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany announced plans to discontinue active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing at its Arklow, Ireland site following a strategic review of its product portfolio. The facility, which employs approximately 100 people, is proposed to cease all operations by the end of 2028. Consultation with employees regarding this proposal will commence immediately.
The review focused on optimizing the company’s manufacturing network and aligning its product portfolio with future business priorities and market demand. As a result of this evaluation, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany determined that production of APIs at Arklow will be discontinued over the next several years.
A spokesperson for Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany stated that the Arklow decision was the outcome of a broader portfolio assessment within its Life Science business, aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness across its global operations.
