Pfizer and BioNTech Secure Singapore Approval for New LP.8.1-Adapted COVID-19 Vaccine

Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority has granted approval to Pfizer and BioNTech’s latest SARS-CoV-2 sublineage LP.8.1-adapted monovalent COVID-19 vaccine, COMIRNATY® LP.8.1, marking a milestone for public health protection in the region. The updated vaccine is authorized for individuals aged six months and older and is expected to become available at select clinics and private practitioners across Singapore starting in October 2025.

Singapore now becomes the first country in Southeast Asia to fully approve this cutting-edge vaccine, reflecting global health authorities’ recommendations, such as those from the U.S. FDA, EMA, and WHO, to prioritize LP.8.1 as the preferred sublineage for the current season’s COVID-19 immunization campaigns. This regulatory endorsement follows robust phase 3 clinical data showing a significant increase—up to four-fold—in neutralizing antibodies targeting LP.8.1 after vaccination, especially in older adults and people with high-risk health conditions.

Pfizer and BioNTech’s leadership highlighted that the approval advances a proactive immunization strategy focused on resilience, prevention, and equitable protection for communities. The LP.8.1-adapted vaccine stands out for its enhanced efficacy against multiple circulating and emerging SARS-CoV-2 sublineages, supporting the ongoing evolution of global COVID-19 vaccination protocols.
