Government of Canada Commits $127M to Strengthen Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences

The Government of Canada announced a $127M investment to advance domestic biomanufacturing and life sciences capabilities through support of two major initiatives led by Aspect Biosystems and Providence Health Care (PHC) in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Announced by The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, the funding is part of the country’s Strategic Response Fund (SRF) focused on accelerating innovation, creating high-value jobs, and expanding clinical and commercial infrastructure within Canada’s life sciences sector.

Aspect Biosystems will receive $79 million from the federal government and an additional $23.8 million from the Province of British Columbia to support a $280 million project aimed at expanding the company’s platform for AI-enabled bioprinting of functional human tissues. The initiative will strengthen Aspect’s biomanufacturing and clinical development capabilities, with a focus on regenerative medicine and tissue therapeutics designed to address serious metabolic and endocrine diseases, including diabetes.

The project will maintain 117 existing positions and create 283 new jobs, resulting in a total of 400 high-skilled roles, along with 268 co-op placements for students. Aspect’s work builds on an ongoing collaboration with Novo Nordisk, integrating the company’s cell therapy expertise into Aspect’s therapeutic platform to accelerate commercial development.

Providence Health Care will receive $48 million to establish an innovation hub within the new Clinical Support and Research Centre (CSRC), which will be connected to the upcoming St. Paul’s Hospital on the Jim Pattison Medical Campus. The CSRC hub will house clinical trial infrastructure, wet labs, simulation facilities, and data-driven research spaces designed to promote industry partnerships, translational research, and health technology commercialization.

The initiative will maintain 6,662 full-time jobs and add 768 new positions, along with 597 student co-op opportunities, for a total of 7,430 full-time roles in the Vancouver region.

Together, these projects are intended to expand Canada’s biomanufacturing capacity, accelerate development of next-generation regenerative therapies, and reinforce the country’s ability to respond to future public health challenges through strengthened research, data integration, and commercialization frameworks.
