Bristol Myers Squibb Expands NVIDIA AI Infrastructure to Support Drug Discovery and Development

Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) plans to significantly expand its artificial intelligence compute capacity by deploying an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD with DGX Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, creating what it describes as its most powerful and energy‑efficient single‑owned NVIDIA infrastructure in life sciences.

The upgraded Vera Rubin architecture is expected to deliver up to tenfold higher performance per megawatt than the company’s prior system, enabling larger and more complex AI workloads without a proportional rise in energy consumption. BMS will use the expanded cluster to scale proprietary AI models that support research across oncology, hematology, cardiovascular, immunology, and neuroscience.

The investment builds on nearly three years of collaboration between BMS and NVIDIA, following BMS’s initial deployment of DGX SuperPOD infrastructure for R&D. BMS reports that AI tools are already altering its discovery processes, with automated agents for target identification and validation reducing manual work and a “Predict First” approach integrating AI‑generated predictions into the design of small‑ and large‑molecule programs before bench experiments begin.

The company describes its goal as developing a “hybrid intelligence” model in which AI systems handle data‑intensive tasks while human scientists focus on direction, interpretation, and key decisions. The Vera Rubin cluster will serve as the backbone for training foundation models on BMS’s internal data and for powering agent‑based workflows that evaluate hypotheses at scale. BMS also expects to draw on NVIDIA’s biological AI capabilities, such as BioNeMo, when appropriate, to support molecule design and biological analysis.

Executives from both companies said the expanded infrastructure is intended to improve decision quality and increase the likelihood that advanced programs are well‑supported by evidence, rather than pursuing speed alone.
