Disintegrants are added to oral solid dosage forms to aid in their deaggregation. Disintegrants are formulated to cause a rapid break-up of solids dosage forms when they come into contact with moisture. Disintegration is typically viewed as the first step in the dissolution process. Examples of disintegrants include Crosslinked polymers, including crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone (crospovidone), crosslinked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (croscarmellose sodium), and the modified starch sodium starch glycolate.
